There were 13 original states (colonies). You need to name five. They are: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
A helpful way to remember them is by region. New England (4): New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut. Middle (4): New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware. Southern (5): Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia.
The 13 original colonies are represented by the 13 stripes on the American flag. They declared independence from Britain in 1776 and became the first states.
Group them by region and memorize five. The easiest five: 'New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.'
