At the Constitutional Convention, the Constitution was written. The Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia in 1787 to create a new framework for government.
The Convention was originally called to revise the Articles of Confederation, which had proven too weak. Instead, the delegates decided to write an entirely new document — the Constitution.
George Washington presided over the Convention, and James Madison (the 'Father of the Constitution') was the primary author. Delegates from 12 of the 13 states attended (Rhode Island boycotted).
