OFFICIAL USCIS CIVICS QUESTION

Who elects U.S. senators?

Category: American Government

Official Question & Answer

Question
Who elects U.S. senators?
✦ OFFICIAL ANSWER ✦
Citizens from their state

Why This Is the Answer

U.S. senators are elected by citizens from their state. Every eligible voter in the state can vote for their senator.

This wasn't always the case. Before the 17th Amendment (1913), senators were chosen by state legislatures, not by popular vote. The 17th Amendment changed this to direct election by the people.

Senate elections happen every six years, but they're staggered — about one-third of Senate seats are up for election every two years, so both of your state's senators are rarely on the ballot at the same time.
