George Washington was the first President of the United States. He served from 1789 to 1797 — two terms — and then voluntarily stepped down.
Washington's decision not to seek a third term established the precedent of peaceful transfer of power. This tradition lasted until Franklin Roosevelt won four elections, after which the 22nd Amendment made the two-term limit law.
Washington is also known as the 'Father of Our Country' and the General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. This question is on the 65/20 senior list.
