Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was chosen by the Continental Congress to draft the document because of his reputation as an eloquent writer.
Jefferson was 33 years old when he wrote it in June 1776. The document was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 — the date Americans celebrate as Independence Day.
Jefferson went on to become the third President of the United States (1801-1809). He also doubled the size of the country through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. This question is on the 65/20 senior list.
