The United States entered the Korean War to stop the spread of communism. When communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, the U.S. intervened to defend South Korea.
This was part of the Cold War policy of containment — preventing communism from spreading to new countries. The U.S. fought under a United Nations mandate alongside other allied nations.
The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953 and ended in an armistice (ceasefire) rather than a peace treaty. Korea remains divided today between North Korea (communist) and South Korea (democratic).
