Men ages 18 through 25 must register for the Selective Service because it is required by law. It's also considered a civic duty and helps make the draft fair if one is ever needed.
The Selective Service System maintains a database of men who could be called to military service if Congress ever reinstates the draft. The U.S. has not had a draft since 1973, but registration is still mandatory.
Failing to register can result in penalties including ineligibility for federal financial aid, federal job training, and federal employment. It can also affect naturalization applications.
Say: 'It is required by law' or 'civic duty.'
