Congress has several important powers. You only need to name one: Congress writes (makes) laws, declares war, and makes the federal budget.
Congress also has the power to coin money, regulate commerce, establish post offices, raise and support armies, and approve treaties and presidential appointments (Senate only).
The most fundamental power is lawmaking. All federal laws start as bills introduced in Congress. Both chambers must pass a bill before it goes to the President.
