The first three words of the Constitution are 'We the People.' These words express the idea of self-government — that the government's power comes from the citizens.
This concept, called popular sovereignty, was revolutionary in 1787. Most governments at the time were ruled by monarchs. 'We the People' declared that ordinary citizens are the source of all government authority.
These three words are among the most recognized in American history and represent the foundation of American democracy.
