An amendment is a change or addition to the Constitution. The amendment process allows the Constitution to evolve as the country grows and faces new challenges.
There are currently 27 amendments. The process requires approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states — deliberately difficult to prevent hasty changes.
Important amendments include the Bill of Rights (1-10), abolition of slavery (13th), women's suffrage (19th), and presidential term limits (22nd).
Say: 'A change to the Constitution' or 'an addition to the Constitution.'
