'E Pluribus Unum' means 'Out of many, one' (or 'we all become one'). It was the nation's first motto, adopted in 1782.
The phrase reflects the idea that many states (and many people from many backgrounds) come together to form one united nation. It appears on the Great Seal of the United States and on U.S. currency.
The motto captures a core American value: despite diversity in backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs, Americans are united as one people under one Constitution.
Say: 'Out of many, one.'
