Official Question & Answer

Question
Why does the flag have 50 stars?
✦ OFFICIAL ANSWER ✦
(Because there is) one star for each state; (because) each star represents a state; (because there are) 50 states

Why This Is the Answer

The flag has 50 stars because there are 50 states — one star for each state. As new states have joined the Union, new stars have been added to the flag.

The current 50-star flag has been in use since 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state. The stars are arranged in alternating rows of 6 and 5 on a blue field in the upper left corner.

The first flag had only 13 stars (for the 13 original colonies). The flag has been redesigned 27 times as the country grew from 13 to 50 states. This question is on the 65/20 senior list.

💡 Interview Tip

Say: 'Because there are 50 states' or 'one star for each state.'
