The national anthem of the United States is The Star-Spangled Banner. It was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 during the War of 1812.
Key wrote the poem after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. When he saw the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn, he was inspired to write the words.
'The Star-Spangled Banner' became the official national anthem in 1931. It is traditionally played or sung before major sporting events and at government ceremonies.
