Originally called 'Decoration Day,' Memorial Day began after the Civil War to honor fallen Union soldiers. It was later expanded to honor all American military personnel who gave their lives in service.
Don't confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day: Memorial Day honors those who died in service. Veterans Day honors all who have served, living or dead.
