Checks and balances (also called separation of powers) stops one branch from becoming too powerful. Each branch has the ability to limit the others.
Congress can override a presidential veto. The President can veto laws passed by Congress. The courts can strike down laws as unconstitutional. Congress confirms judicial appointments.
This system was designed by the Founders based on their experience with the British monarchy — they wanted to make sure no single person or group could gain absolute power.
