The United States' main rival during the Cold War was the Soviet Union (also called the USSR or Russia). The Cold War lasted from roughly 1947 to 1991.
The Cold War was a period of intense political, military, and ideological rivalry between the U.S. (capitalism and democracy) and the Soviet Union (communism and authoritarian rule). It was called 'cold' because the two superpowers never fought each other directly.
The rivalry played out through proxy wars (Korea, Vietnam), the nuclear arms race, the space race, and global competition for influence. It ended when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
