Official Question & Answer

Question
Why did the United States enter World War II?
✦ OFFICIAL ANSWER ✦
(Bombing of) Pearl Harbor; Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor; to support the Allied Powers (England, France, and Russia); to oppose the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan)

Why This Is the Answer

The United States entered World War II because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The attack killed over 2,400 Americans and destroyed much of the Pacific Fleet. President Roosevelt called it 'a date which will live in infamy.' Congress declared war on Japan the next day, and Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. shortly after.

The U.S. fought against the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) alongside the Allied Powers (England, France, and Russia). The war ended in 1945 with Allied victory.
