Before becoming President, Eisenhower was a general in World War II. He served as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe.
Eisenhower planned and led the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 — the largest amphibious invasion in history and a turning point that led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany.
He later became the 34th President (1953-1961), serving during the Korean War and the early Cold War period.
