Category: American Government
Many documents influenced the U.S. Constitution. You only need to name one. The most common answers include the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Federalist Papers, and the Mayflower Compact.
The Articles of Confederation was America's first attempt at a national government (1781), but it was too weak — Congress couldn't tax or enforce laws. Its failures led directly to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
The Federalist Papers, written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, argued for ratifying the Constitution and explained how the new government would work.
