The U.S. war between the North and the South was the Civil War, also called the War between the States. It lasted from 1861 to 1865.
The North (the Union) fought to preserve the United States as one country. The South (the Confederacy) wanted to secede (separate) and form their own nation, largely to preserve the institution of slavery.
The Union won under President Abraham Lincoln. The war ended slavery, preserved the Union, and led to the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments — fundamentally reshaping American society.
Say: 'The Civil War.'
