Each state has two senators for equal representation — so that small states have the same voice as large states in the Senate. This arrangement is known as the Great Compromise (or Connecticut Compromise).
At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, large states like Virginia wanted representation based on population. Small states like New Jersey wanted equal representation. The compromise created two chambers: the House (based on population) and the Senate (equal, two per state).
This compromise was essential to getting the Constitution ratified. Without it, small states would never have agreed to join the union.
Say: 'Equal representation for small states' or 'the Great Compromise.'
