OFFICIAL USCIS CIVICS QUESTION

Why is it important to pay federal taxes?

Category: American Government

Official Question & Answer

Question
Why is it important to pay federal taxes?
✦ OFFICIAL ANSWER ✦
Required by law; all people pay to fund the federal government; required by the (U.S.) Constitution (16th Amendment); civic duty

Why This Is the Answer

Paying federal taxes is important because it is required by law and because taxes fund the federal government. The 16th Amendment gives Congress the power to collect income taxes.

Federal taxes pay for national defense, Social Security, Medicare, federal courts, highways, scientific research, and many other services. Without tax revenue, the government couldn't function.

Federal income tax returns are due by April 15 each year. Paying taxes is both a legal requirement and a civic duty.
