During the Cold War, the main concern of the United States was communism (and nuclear war). Either answer is acceptable.
The U.S. feared that communism would spread around the world, threatening democracy and free markets. This fear drove American foreign policy for decades — leading to involvement in Korea, Vietnam, and numerous covert operations.
The nuclear arms race added an existential dimension: both the U.S. and Soviet Union built thousands of nuclear weapons, and the threat of mutual destruction kept tensions extremely high.
Say: 'Communism' — it's the simplest answer and connects to the Korean and Vietnam War questions.
