The President is elected for four (4) years. Presidential elections are held every four years in November.
The President can serve a maximum of two terms (8 years total) under the 22nd Amendment. This limit was added after Franklin Roosevelt won four consecutive elections.
The four-year term was a compromise — long enough for the President to accomplish meaningful work, short enough for voters to make a change if needed.
