Category: American Government
The United States is a republic β a system where the people elect representatives to make laws and govern on their behalf. It's also called a representative democracy or a Constitution-based federal republic.
This is different from a pure (direct) democracy, where every citizen votes on every issue. In a republic, citizens vote for leaders who then make decisions. The Constitution sets the rules for how this system works, which is why it's called 'Constitution-based.'
The 'federal' part means power is shared between the national government and state governments β neither one has all the power. This design was intentional: the Founders wanted to prevent any single person or group from gaining too much control.
Give one clear answer: 'A republic' or 'a representative democracy.' Either is correct β pick the one you're most comfortable saying.
