Category: American Government
The Declaration of Independence is important for several reasons: it announced that America was free from British control, it declared that all people are created equal, and it identified rights that government cannot take away.
Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and adopted on July 4, 1776, the Declaration didn't create a government β that came later with the Constitution. Instead, it was a formal announcement to the world that the American colonies were breaking away from Great Britain.
The Declaration's most famous line β 'Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness' β established that certain rights are inherent (natural) and not granted by any government.
Pick one reason: 'It says America is free from British control' is the most straightforward answer.
