Category: American Government
There are three branches of government because the Founders wanted to prevent any single person or group from becoming too powerful. This design is called separation of powers or checks and balances.
Each branch has the power to limit the others. Congress makes laws, but the President can veto them. The President enforces laws, but the courts can rule them unconstitutional. The courts interpret laws, but Congress confirms judges.
Think of it as a relay race with three runners who also act as referees for each other — no single runner can win alone, and each one keeps the others honest.
Say: 'Checks and balances' or 'so one part does not become too powerful.'
