Category: American Government
The Declaration of Independence is the founding document that said the American colonies were free from Britain. Adopted on July 4, 1776, it was a formal announcement of independence.
Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration explained why the colonies were separating from Great Britain — listing grievances like taxation without representation, quartering soldiers in colonists' homes, and denial of self-government.
Keep this distinction clear: the Declaration (1776) announced freedom. The Constitution (1787) built the government. They are two different documents with two different purposes.
Say: 'The Declaration of Independence.' Don't confuse it with the Constitution.
